Tooth Extractions – Costs and Procedure

dca-blog_tooth-extraction-female-brunette

Having a tooth pulled is something many people dread, but the procedure is common and often simple. Dental extraction refers to the removal of a tooth from its socket within the jaw. Tooth extractions are often a last resort after conventional treatments have failed. Simple extractions are performed on teeth that are fully erupted and visible inside the oral cavity. Surgical extractions remove teeth that are encased in soft tissues or bone, such as impacted third molars, also known as wisdom teeth. Orthodontists may extract teeth to correct crowding problems. Other reasons for tooth extractions include:

  • Poorly positioned or non-functioning teeth
  • Severe tooth decay, damage, or trauma
  • Chemotherapy or radiation treatments
  • Impending organ transplant

How Much Does a Typical Dental Extraction Cost?

The cost for tooth extractions varies. Typically, the more difficult it is to remove the tooth, the more expensive it will be. Many dental insurance plans cover a large percentage of the cost. An affordable dentist may work with you to manage the financial impact of a dental extraction.

How Do I Prepare for a Dental Extraction?

Your dentist will record your medical history carefully before performing a dental extraction. You’ll have the opportunity to discuss anesthesia and sedation options such as a local anesthetic injection, nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and general anesthesia. You may need to take antibiotics if you have a heart murmur, weak immune system, or infection is likely.

What Happens During the Extraction Procedure?

You’ll receive an injection of a local anesthetic in your gums or jaw for simple tooth extractions. Once the area is numb, the dentist will grasp the tooth with extraction forceps and gently rock is back and forth to loosen it. Other tools may be used to help remove the tooth. You may feel pressure, but you should not feel any pain. A surgical extraction is more complicated, but you will probably be under general anesthesia and will not remember the process. After the procedure, you’ll be given a set of specific instructions concerning aftercare, diet and oral hygiene. To ensure a smooth recovery, follow all instructions carefully.

What Are the Potential Complications of Tooth Extractions?

A condition called dry socket occurs when no blood clot forms in the socket or a formed one becomes dislodged. The absence of the clot exposes sensitive nerves and bone to air. The condition is painful, but it is easily treated with a medicated dressing. Other possible complications include:

  • Infection
  • Nerve injury
  • Damage to adjacent teeth
  • Misalignment
  • Jaw fractures
