Did you know that Oral Cancer is one of the 10 most common cancers? – The treatment of oral cancer has not improved significantly in the last 40 years. Despite advances in surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, the average five-year survival rate for oral cancer is still only about 50%. This is because it is typically discovered and diagnosed later than other cancers due to the fact that obvious symptoms don’t usually become noticeable to the patient until too late.  Most of these cancers would have a much higher survival rate if they were only diagnosed earlier.  Dr. Quevedo and his hygienist always screen for oral cancer at every examination.  When we see an unusual red or white spot in the mouth that doesn’t look normal, we a simple brush biopsy to aid in early detection.   This simple screening biopsy is called Oral CDX, and it is very easy to do, as well as painless.  We simply rub a special brush on any suspicious area in the mouth and send it to the pathology lab for evaluation.  It’s fast, easy, and most importantly, it could save your life!
