Chipped Teeth – What Can Your Dentist Do?
Chipped teeth are extremely common, and most are minor and treatable. You can get a chipped tooth by biting into a hard food or receiving an impact to your mouth or face. A chipped tooth may or may not cause pain. If it is severe or large and exposes the nerves inside the tooth’s inner layers, you may experience unusual sensitivity to hot or cold foods and pain when chewing. When chips occur on the pointed chewing surfaces of your molars, the injury is called a broken cusp. Although this type of chipped tooth rarely causes pain, you may need a crown or onlay to restore the tooth’s shape and prevent further damage.
If you suffer a chipped tooth, rinse your mouth with warm, salt water and use a cold compress to reduce any swelling until you can see an affordable dentist. If you have bleeding, apply pressure with a piece of clean gauze. Whenever possible, make an appointment with your dentist on the same day. If that’s not possible, cover the broken area with dental cement to protect the chipped tooth until you can obtain professional treatment.
If a chip is small, your dentist may be able to just smooth and polish the area to restore an acceptable shape and surface texture. If there is extensive damage, the dentist may place a crown or filling to restore normal appearance and function to the chipped tooth, and protect it from infection. Severely chipped teeth may require root canal treatment.
