Dental Implants Can Restore Your Smile

Dental Implants and Implant Dentures - Restoration Without Sacrifice

November 10, 2014 By Sweetwater Smiles

Dental Implants Can Restore Your Smile

Endodontic treatments, also called root canals, are dental procedures intended to save teeth, but they’re not always possible. Sometimes badly diseased teeth must be extracted. When you’re left with missing teeth, the impact on your life can be significant. Tooth loss can affect your self-esteem, make it difficult to bite and chew, and cause your other teeth to shift over time. Fortunately, with enough healthy jawbone in place, affordable dental implants can often replace missing teeth. An implant is a surgically inserted anchor that fuses with your jawbone and holds an artificial crown in place. They can also be used as anchors for partial or full implant dentures and bridges.

Understanding the Dental Implant Process

Dental implants are stable and reliable, and they don't require procedures on adjacent teeth. While some can be placed in one day, many implant restorations take place over the course of several appointments. First, a titanium screw is inserted into your jaw and covered with gum tissue. It is allowed to fuse with your jawbone for several months before the abutment, an extension that holds the crown, is placed. In some cases, the implant and abutment are a single unit and only require one surgery. After a healing period, the dentist fashions a natural-looking permanent crown and cements it into place to complete the restoration. All dentists receive some training in implant surgeries while in dental school, but depending on your needs, you may be referred to an endodontist, oral surgeon, or other specialists for evaluation and care.

A Great Alternative

Even the best dental implants are not the same as your natural teeth, so it’s preferable to save your teeth through root canals or other treatments when possible. However, when it’s not an option, a dental implant is an excellent alternative. The best candidates for dental implants have good overall health and oral hygiene and don’t smoke. Talk with your dentist, endodontist or periodontist about your eligibility for implant placement.
