Flossing Daily to Prevent Tooth Loss and Gum Disease
Brushing twice a day is important for maintaining your dental health, but it’s not enough to protect you from gum disease and tooth loss. While periodontal disease isn’t the usual cause of pulpal death, inflamed and infected gums greatly increase your risk of tooth loss and the need for such invasive treatments as root canals. If you add daily flossing to your dental care routine, you’ll reduce your chances of gum disease, tooth loss, and the need for dentures.
A study in 2006 involving 51 sets of twins revealed the results of daily brushing versus brushing plus daily use of dental floss. One twin in each pair was told to only brush their teeth. The other twin flossed in addition to brushing. After a two-week period, the twins who flossed had 38 percent less gum bleeding.
If you have sensitive gums that bleed, you may avoid flossing between your teeth properly, since you may assume that using floss will make your condition worse. In reality, it can actually improve gum health at almost any stage and even stop the bleeding.
Even if you never flossed as a child or teenager, it’s never too late to start an effective dental care routine. By flossing thoroughly every day, you can significantly improve your dental health and the condition of your gums, avoiding future problems. If you have sensitive gums or your teeth are close together, look for flossing products that are designed specifically to address these issues.
